Masterclass with Prof. Gisèle Sapiro (CAS Fellow/EHESS/CNRS Paris).

Jewish writers in the German Confederation encountered significant obstacles, including state censorship, pervasive antisemitism, and limited access to public platforms. These constraints necessitated the development of distinctive forms of political authorship, which relied upon certain rhetorical strategies and the accumulation of social capital in the absence of formal institutional support. Drawing parallels with Gisèle Sapiro’s analysis of the French Restoration and the Dreyfus Affair, the workshop positions Vormärz-era Jewish authorship within the broader 19th-century discourse concerning contested literary authority.

The Masterclass is organized in cooperation with the SFB 1369 “Cultures of Vigilance” and is part of the CAS Research Focus “Scales”.

On invitation only.
